Obesity, Weight Gain & New York
New York - Obesity & Overweight
More than half of New York City adults - 53 percent, or 2.8 million people
- are either overweight or obese, according to a recent obesity report.
Obesity levels in adults are highest in the Bronx (24 percent), followed
by Brooklyn (21 percent), Staten Island (18 percent), Queens (16 percent)
and Manhattan (13 percent). In some neighborhoods, as many as 1 in 4 adults
are obese the report found. Those areas include Central and East Harlem,
East New York and the South Bronx.
New York - Little Exercise
One-quarter of New Yorkers said they hadn't exercised in the past month,
and twice as many African-American and Hispanic adults report not eating
fruit or vegetables in the previous day as whites and Asians (18 percent
or higher vs. 9 percent).
New York - BMI
The city recommended that adults try to keep their body mass index under
25, and encouraged residents to eat fruits and vegetables every day. Officials
also singled out fast food by stating, "Eating less fast food and
preparing smaller, healthier meals at home can result in gradual, sustained
weight loss."
