Weight Loss Research: Comfort Eating & Stress Link

Weight Loss, Stress & Comfort Eating
Although researchers have had clues that there might be some scientific basis for the notion of ``comfort eating,'' the precise link between stress and eating has not been clear. Now, scientists have developed a model for a biological link between stress and the drive to eat: Food with lots of sugar, fat and calories appears literally to calm the body's response to chronic stress, which is why we comfort eat.

Stress & Fat Cells
In addition, research indicates stress hormones encourage formation of fat cells, makes us gain weight and affects our health. It may be at least one reason why obesity rates are increasing so fast many modern societies.

There's a multitude of behavioral, attitudinal and psychosocial factors that determine whether humans engage in comfort eating. It would be a distortion to say comfort eating is purely driven by the stress response. But this explains mysteries regarding comfort eating and stress that stress researchers have been unable to resolve for a long time.
