Nastech begins clinical trial of nasal delivery of obesity drug

Peptide YY3-36 Weight Loss Treatment
Nastech Pharmaceutical Co. Inc. said it has commenced a phase 1 clinical trial of an intranasal administration of peptide YY3-36, a weight loss treatment for obesity.

Peptide YY3-36 Diet Trial
The diet trial will evaluate the nasal absorption and safety of peptide YY3-36, a hormone naturally produced by the gut in relation to the calorie content of a meal. Intravenous infusion of the treatment was found in earlier weight loss studies to have caused patients to consume significantly fewer calories, but the infusion takes 90 minutes and must be completed daily.

Intravenous infusion of (peptide YY3-36) was recently shown to have significant promise in the treatment of obesity but clearly the delivery issue needs to be solved.
