Adenovirus-36 & Obesity LinkMeanwhile, though many people have heard reports about the possibility of obesity being genetic, there is also a though that it could be contagious, like the flu. Researchers have found that mice and chickens infected with adenovirus-36, a common human virus, put on much more fat than uninfected animals. Studies have also shown that 20 to 30 percent of overweight humans are infected with adenovirus-36, compared to the general population. The thought is that the virus increases the number of fat cells, and encourages them to store more fat. The connection between obesity and adenovirus-36 may yet yield a completely different approach to the treatment of obesity. See also: Axokine
