KB - 141 Weight Loss Drug

Swedish and U.S. weight loss drugs researchers say they have found a substance that increases metabolic rate, the burning of calories, without increasing heart rate.

Monkeys given the new "weight loss" hormone-like compound lost 7 percent of their body weight in a week, the BBC reports.

Similar drugs have been found in the past but they always caused the thyroid to speed up heart rate while speeding up metabolism so calories could be burned.

The new compound, called KB-141, works on the same principle as the hormone normally produced by the thyroid.

A team of researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the University of California in San Francisco, call it the "holy grail" of weight loss.

The next step is to see if a human version of KB-141 can be produced.
