Obesity Drugs to Reduce WeightAnti-obesity or weight loss drugs sound great - after all, who doesn't want a pill to lose weight for them! But the reality of these weight reduction medications is more down to earth. They aren't a miracle solution for weight or fat loss. "I know of no weight reduction drugs that absorb fat. It would be nice to say there's this drug that's a sponge that will suck it up, but it won't," said Dr. Arthur Frank, medical director of the weight management program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. And the obesity drugs that do increase metabolism or block the absorption of fat also require work and diet modification. None of the obesity drugs on the market is particularly potent, experts said. And they won't work without a decrease in food and fat consumption coupled with an increase in physical activity. "[Obesity drugs] cannot be used exclusively. That's a common misconception," said Chris Rosenbloom, a registered dietitian and chair of the nutrition department at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. "You can out-eat any of these drugs." For next page, click Obesity & Weight Loss Drugs
