Very Low Fat Diets and HealthVery-low-fat diets may be short on essential fatty acids, found only in oily fish, nuts, seeds and plant oils, and vegetarian low-fat diets may also be short in vitamin B12. There is currently much debate about the health of very-low-fat, high-carb diets as there is research to show such diets actually lower 'good' HDL cholesterol and adversely affect the total blood fats profile in the body - but if the carbs are 'complex', not refined, this may not be a problem. Lowered HDL levels may not be of concern if total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol also drop (which they do on an Ornish-type diet), and adding omega-3 fish oil supplements to a very-low-fat diet will get around the problem.
