The American Society of Bariatric Surgery says weight loss surgery operations have increased from about 20,000 in 1995 to an estimated 45,000 in 2001. It estimates a 7 percent complication rate.

But one study of 800 weight loss surgery patients found complication rates of 20 to 40 percent, with everything from intestinal leaks to nutritional deficiencies.
