UC San Francisco would use a reversible method called gastric banding, where a band is placed around the upper portion of the organ to create a smaller stomach. Banding, however, does not reduce ghrelin.

Each hospital claims its method is the most cautious route, but the divergence underscores how relatively new the weight loss surgical procedures are and how little is known about their long-term effects on children.

Both are life-altering operations.

After either weight loss surgery operation, patients can only eat a small portion - about a cup - at a time for the remainder of their lives or risk expanding their stomachs and regaining the weight.

Side effects from the surgeries include nausea and diarrhea.

Both hospitals say they will only operate on select cases. Patients and their families must undergo a rigorous screening process so doctors are confident patients will have help changing their dietary and exercise habits, vital to keeping the weight off. The operation is not a magic bullet, they stress, to keep people slim.

In addition, both hospitals want patients to have tried an organized weight-loss program for at least six months before qualifying for the surgery.
