Laparoscopic gastric bypass is quickly
becoming the gold standard of surgical therapy. Extrapolating from results
of open procedures, this operation provides the best long-term weight
loss with the fewest long-term complications. Moreover, the laparoscopic
approach is less invasive, and in skilled hands is associated with fewer
complications. The adjustable gastric band is gaining popularity as a
potential alternative to gastric bypass.

Although the associated weight loss
with this procedure is more modest, the device has the advantage
of being easier to place and easier to remove. However, long-term
data on the use of the gastric band in the United States are still
needed before it can be advocated for widespread use.

Weight Loss Surgery - No Guarantees
Gastrointestinal weight loss surgery is not an easy weight loss option.
It's a serious surgical procedure whose long-term weight loss success
depends on a patient's commitment to diet and behavior modification for
life, along with exercise for weight control.
