Gastrointestinal Weight Loss Surgery for Children

Two California hospitals are preparing to offer increasingly popular, but controversial stomach-shrinking surgeries - on children.

When Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto opens its pediatric weight-loss center in September, the hospital plans to use "stomach stapling" in select cases of adolescent obesity.

UC San Francisco, which already has a weight-loss center for children, is preparing to perform a weight loss surgical procedure on children that uses a band on the stomach.

Doctors at both hospitals say that while such procedures - called bariatric surgeries - are controversial, they're necessary to treat the growing ranks of obese minors.
