Mid-Life Weight Gain

For most women, increase in weight starts during perimenopause, the years leading up to menopause. That's when we begin to produce less estrogen, which seems to trigger the changes in our weight and shape. Unfortunately, expansion of our fat cells isn't the only change we face. Typically our metabolism is slowing down too, and the amount of muscle we have is shrinking, which is bad news for weight loss. Because muscle burns more calories than fat, and the less muscle we have, the fewer calories we burn.

Which is why increasing our exercise in middle age is so important for weight control.
