Running & Weight Control
Middle-aged runners are leaner than sedentary
men because exercise helps to control weight gain in middle age. However,
recent findings show that middle aged men who only maintain weekly running
distances (as oppose to increasing distances) are still expected to gain
weight, waist circumference and intra-abdominal fat. Why? Running distances
actually need to increase annually by 1.4 miles per week in order to avoid
weight gain and compensate for the expected increase in waist circumference
between the ages 20 and 50. This means that runners who average 10 miles
per week at age thirty should increase their weekly running distance to
24 miles by age forty if they want to maintain body weight.
Weight Loss Advice
Obesity and weight reduction is becoming
a huge health issue. Before buying any weight loss pills or enrolling
for gastrointestinal weight loss surgery, remember that long-term weight
control is based on a healthy balanced diet and regular exercise, no matter
which weight loss option you choose.
