What Are the Causes of Obesity?
Genes affect susceptibility to obesity.
But they don't cause obesity, and they certainly haven't triggered the
current obesity epidemic. For example, the gene pool of the American population
didn't suddenly start to change 20 years ago. The true causes of obesity
are environmental changes acting on the same genes that were present all
along. The challenge is to identify what these environmental changes are
and how they caused the sudden rise in obesity.
