Weight May Affect Macular Degeneration
Weight Loss Study Summary
A recent weight loss study suggests that age related macular degeneration
(which can cause blindness) is more likely in people who are obese.
Weight Loss Study Method
Obese patients had twice the risk of macular degeneration and the larger
a person's waist circumference; the more likely they were to lose their
vision. However, incorporating exercise at least three times a week cut
that risk by approximately 25 percent.
Weight Loss Study Results
The weight loss study, conducted by Harvard researchers followed 261 patients
(over the age of 60) with mild age-related macular degeneration for approximately
four and a half years.
