A recent weight loss survey found that the number of obese people in Colorado
is on the rise. In fact, one in seven adults in Colorado is obese and
the number of obese has doubled over the past 11 years. In 1990 the rate
of obesity in Colorado was 6.9 percent, compared with the latest percentage
of 14.9 percent. However, Colorado still contains the fewest overweight
people in the States according to the Colorado Department of Public Health
and Environment.
Obesity Costs - Colorado
It is estimated that approximately 4,500 people in Colorado die of obesity-related
illnesses each year and obesity costs the state $500 million over the
course of a year. The health costs associated with obesity exceed those
associated with tobacco use. The weight loss survey also found that the
poor in Colorado are more likely to be obese. One in five is considered
obese for those with a household income below $25,000.
