Weight Control in Women & Men
In a preliminary weight loss study recently
conducted on 76 Beaumont patients who were morbidly obese (a 5-foot-8
person who weighs 310 pounds, for example), the men burned 13.6 calories
per minute at their peak exercise level, while the women burned 10.5 calories
per minute.
"That's a 30 percent difference,"
McCullough says.
In addition to the muscle mass differences,
McCullough says men and women tend to carry excess weight in different
ways. Men tend to gain it in their stomach area, while women usually carry
it on their hips and buttocks.
For unknown reasons, excess weight usually
melts away faster from the abdominal area faster than the hips, McCullough
says, explaining weight loss is typically most noticeable first in the
face and chin, then abdomen, then hips.

Weight Loss & Weight Management
An increase in physical activity is an important part of your weight loss
program. Physical activity improves your muscle/fat ratio - thus raising
metabolism for easier weight loss - and boosts your motivation to maintain
the weight you lose.
